Why NetSuite

When I started at The Next Digitals in June 2022, I was familiar with several other ERP systems but not yet with NetSuite. Now, a year later, I find myself working in a NetSuite environment every day. A perfect moment to reflect on how I view the capabilities and limitations of NetSuite.

In the world of business software, NetSuite has emerged as a powerhouse, offering a comprehensive suite of applications designed to streamline operations and drive business growth. With its flexibility, functional core, and wide range of features, NetSuite has become the go-to solution for businesses of all sizes. In this blog post, we explore four key reasons why NetSuite is a strong match for organizations seeking a robust and versatile business management platform.

1. Real Flexibility: Everything Is Customizable

One of NetSuite’s greatest strengths is its ability to adapt to the unique needs of businesses across many industries. From financial management and enterprise resource planning (ERP) to customer relationship management (CRM) and e-commerce, NetSuite provides a wide range of customizable modules that can be tailored to specific business requirements.

Recently someone asked me how users notice which module they are working in. The answer is simple: they don’t. Everything operates under the same umbrella.

Within that environment, NetSuite offers the flexibility to configure workflows, customize user interfaces, and develop scripts to ensure the software aligns perfectly with your organization’s needs.

Let me give an example:
You want users to receive a popup with instructions when they fill in a certain field? That’s possible. You can also trigger alerts to specific users in the background, highlight values like conditional formatting in Excel, or create new workflow steps based on form input. The system does not limit how far you can go with these customizations.

2. Not Sexy, but Very Functional

While some software solutions focus on flashy interfaces or trendy features, NetSuite prioritizes functionality that truly supports business operations. You could almost say the UX designers took a back seat.

But because financial data is read and analyzed much like a newspaper, most users are not concerned about whether the interface looks “sexy.” What matters most is that it works. Many ERP tasks are repetitive, which means daily users develop strong efficiency through experience and learning curves.

This learning curve ultimately makes users faster and more effective in their work. From my perspective, it is therefore a fair trade-off that functionality takes precedence over appearance in NetSuite. Businesses can rely on a dependable and efficient system that delivers results day after day.

Let me give an example:
NetSuite proves that a lot of functionality can fit within one screen by using horizontal tab bars, dropdown selections, field groups, and multiple sublists. This layout exists by default but can also be customized. You don’t have to be a UX expert to adjust it, although we do recommend maintaining a clear structure and removing unused fields.

3. All-In: NetSuite Has Something for Everything You Need

The clue is in the name. NetSuite is a suite of applications. Its broad ecosystem covers a wide spectrum of business processes, making it a strong all-in-one solution for organizations looking to consolidate their software and data landscape.

From finance and operations to sales and marketing, NetSuite modules integrate seamlessly, providing real-time visibility across departments. Whether you need to manage finances, track inventory, automate sales workflows, or analyze customer data, NetSuite offers tools that support efficient operations and informed decision-making.

There is even an app marketplace called SuiteApps where additional solutions can be installed and shared.

Of course, there is also a downside. Because NetSuite is so flexible, every implementation is different. Each organization selects its own combination of modules, scripts, and SuiteApps, creating a unique system landscape.

The most common discussions among NetSuite professionals revolve around selecting the best functionality for a given situation. Many experts love this challenge. Being able to choose the right solution is often what separates a good consultant from a great one.

And yes, it happens that experts later discover a solution that might have been a better fit earlier. There is always a “Technology Value Gap” between what is possible and what is actually implemented. The simple explanation is that NetSuite offers so many possibilities that no one can fully oversee them all — not even NetSuite itself.

Let me give an example:
When entering Advanced Customer Support (ACS), NetSuite provides a three-month onboarding program where they analyze how your organization uses the platform. The goal is to improve how your NetSuite environment is utilized. At TND we approach this differently, but it once again shows that every NetSuite environment is unique.

4. Booming — So Be Part of It

As long as organizations worldwide continue to look for integrated and scalable software solutions, NetSuite’s popularity will keep growing. Its powerful capabilities, cloud-based infrastructure, and ongoing innovation have positioned the platform as a leader in the market.

By adopting NetSuite, businesses can stay ahead and leverage a platform that continuously evolves to meet changing business demands. Thousands of companies worldwide already rely on it.

Let me give an example:
When NetSuite releases a new feature, it may appear as an optional module or become available to all users. In both cases, the feature integrates into the platform’s core and connects with existing functionality. Similar to an iPhone update, you can read the release notes or discover the improvements over time. The key difference is that these features are shaped by feedback from thousands of users.

Conclusion

My answer to the question “Why NetSuite?” has evolved significantly over the past year. Most clients are very positive about the platform and often become strongly attached to it. And as mentioned earlier, the consultant’s choice of solution makes a significant difference in how well the system works for a specific situation.

Our NetSuite consultants enjoy finding the right match and discussing solutions with other enthusiasts before implementation. Ultimately, every organization must determine what is most important for its own operations.

In my view, NetSuite offers answers to those needs through its all-in approach, its real flexibility, and its focus on functionality. These qualities help transform ERP from a generic system into something that truly feels like “our own system.”

If you would like to be part of that journey or need help exploring the possibilities, we would be happy to take a look with you.
